The Museum currently offers three student educational programs for fourth and fifth grade school children during the school year, free of charge. Support materials for use in the classroom prior to the students’ visit to the Museum are available on this website by clicking teacher support material. Materials include lesson plans, graphics and illustrations that can be reproduced for classroom use, and a bibliography of related materials. We ask teachers to fill out the evaluation form after participating in the program and return it to the Museum.

FOURTH GRADE
WOODLAND GARDEN PROGRAM
Offered the first week of May by the Garden Club of Buzzards Bay, the fourth grade WOODLAND GARDEN program introduces students to the marvels and complex nature of flowers. Topics for exploration include seed dispersal, pant life cycles, habitat, and environmental and ecological issues. The program includes a guided tour through the woodland garden, a hands-on botany lesson, the introduction of plant terminology and close inspection of plant materials.
Please contact Ellie Smith at 508-758-4973 to book the Fourth Grade Woodland Garden Program.

FIFTH GRADE APIARY PROGRAM
Developed with fifth grade teachers in New Bedford Schools, GROWING IDEAS: CULTIVATING CONNECTIONS utilizes this unique urban garden setting to introduce students to the important role of the honey bee, gardening techniques, conservation practices, bee-keeping operations and the interaction and interdependency of the environment in plant and food production.

The program is offered in late September and early October. Students are introduced to the role of the honey-bee, pollination, basic anatomy of the bee, the production of honey, the beehive, bee-keeping techniques, the protective clothing of the beekeeper and other bee-keeping equipment. Students view the exhibit in the Apiary and examine bees, pollen and honeycombs with magnifying glasses. Students construct a cardboard hexagon which the class uses to build a honeycomb model. The finished model is taken back to the classroom.

Please contact Cindy Barber, Programs Coordinator at the Museum for further information and scheduling.

HISTORY PROGRAM FOR
FIFTH GRADERS
With the establishment of the whaling trade, the population of New Bedford grew sevenfold between 1800 and 1830. By the early part of the 19th century, New Bedford had eclipsed Nantucket as the nation’s preeminent whaling port and entered into the Golden Age of Whaling.

This program is offered in late February and March.  This “chapter” of local history explores the land-based domestic community of New Bedford during the 19th century. Using historic artifacts, including this 1834 whaling mansion and its collections of furnishings and decorative arts, students will explore:

• The impact of the Quaker religion in the 19th century in New Bedford;
• The entrepreneurial spirit and opportunities of a growing and thriving community;
• The domestic and social life in New Bedford.

Please contact Cindy Barber, Programs Coordinator at the Museum for further information and scheduling.

HIGH SCHOOL INTERN PROGRAM
The Museum works with high school and college interns. Program content, timeframe and commitment are customized to be mutually beneficial to the Museum and participating student.
